自1999年以來，南視覺美術館（RCMARTMUSEUM）的前身紅色經典藝術館、經典畫廊就致力于把自己的發展跟中國當代藝術的本土化進程聯系起來。繼2000年成功舉辦“新中國畫大展”之后，2002年又獨資承辦了中國第一個三年展——首屆中國藝術三年展。之后，南視覺美術館著力于全面推出生于七十年代的青年藝術家，“未來考古學：第二屆中國藝術三年展”的舉辦及其產生的巨大影響，成為這一戰略思路的最好體現。兩屆三年展的舉辦使南視覺美術館逐步完善了“另一種”三年展模式：一、就主體而言，它是民間機構投資的三年展；二、就內容而言，它是中國當代藝術的三年展；三、就地點而言，它是一個漂流的三年展。

此外，中國獨立影像年度展、中國紀錄片交流周已經成為南視覺美術館的常設項目。這些大型展覽的策劃和運作表明，在國內為數眾多的獨立藝術空間中，南視覺美術館超越了展館的空間限制以及功能限制，被賦予了新的含義——它一直是以一個積極的獨立主體，在較高的平臺上參與和推動著中國當代藝術機制的建設，并正在通過自身的努力逐步向更高的水準發展。

目前，位于南京市北京西路72號的新址，正在進行大規模改造的南視覺美術館，將更加適宜當代藝術的展示和交流。到2006年，新址所在的南京2021藝術區將建成為中國長江三角洲最重要的獨立藝術區之一。

Since1999,RCM,followingitspredecessorsofClassicalRedGalleryandClassicalgallery,hasbeendevotingitselftolinkingitsowndevelopmentwiththeprocessofChinesecontemporaryarts.Afterthesuccessof“ExhibitionofNeo-ChinesePainting”heldinShanghaiandNanjingin2000,RCMinitistedthefirstChinesetriennialexhibition-the1stTrienialofChineseArtGuangzhouwithitssoleinvestment.Sincethen,theseldom-usedCarpetmethod(selectingartpiecesthroughoutallgalleries)whichwasadoptedinthepreparationofthe“ArcheologyoftheFuture;theExhibitionofthe2ndTriennialofChineseArts”extendedgreatinfluenceincontemporaryChineseartarenathroughthewayofboththeprocessandthefinalexhibitionandpublishing.Theholdingofthesetwoexhibitionshasbeengraduallysettingupanewexhibitionmode-“theAlienatedGenre”:1.Itisanexhibitioninvestedbynon-governmetinstitute.2.ItistheexhibitionofcontemporaryChinesearts.3.Itisamobileexhibition.

AndtheAnnualexhibitionoftheindependentfilmsandtheExchangeWeekoftheChineseDocumentaryhavebecometheregularactivitiesoftheRCM.Somemulti-fieldsandtrans-mediaactivitieshavegainedgreatattentionofRCM.Allthesegreatexhibitionandoperationexpressclearlythatamongnumerousdemosticindependentartfacilities,RCMhasbrokenthelimitsofbothspaceandfunctionofagalleryandhasbeengrantedabrand-newimplication.Servingasandactiveindependententity,RCMhasalwaysbeenparticipatingandpromotingtheconstructionofcontemporaryChineseArtmechanismanditsparesnoenhanceitselftohigherlevel.Alarge-scaledocumentaryfilm,SailingintheOcean-AJourneytoChineseContemparyArt,investedbyRCManddirectedbyfamousdirectedbyfamousdirectorWangxiaoshuaiisonthewayofshooting.ThiswillbethefiresthistotyofChinesecontemporaryartinvideoform.OnJuly29th,wewillholdtheExhibitionofChineseInkpaintingLiteratureinNanjingwhichwillsummarizetheinkpaintingachievementofChinasincethebeginningofreformandopening-updrive.

June2006,thenewbuildingofRCMdesignedbyfamousarchitector,ZhangLei,inWestBeijingroad72#BldNO.1wasformallyestablished.
